Clinical Research requirement in Time tested Herbals

Clinical research encompasses on testing in humans. Which includes surveys, experiments of comparative efficacy, efficiency and risk/benefit ratios of diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive strategies. Clinical Research is an indispensable part of drug discovery that ensures that the drug, which is to be marketed, is safe and effective. Any new drug before being marketed has to be evaluated for its safety and efficacy concerns. Step by step guide includes the experimentation in animals and then in humans. Situation of Clinical research in India, is such that Global pharmaceutical R&D is on the rise and is expected to grow by more than 10% during the next five years. With vast data on herbal medicines through Ayurveda channel or Tibetan or other traditional/indigenous sciences or practices, herbs have been used since centuries together. It is easier to take up the channel of scientific research in herbals. In past one decade, number of leading manufacturer s have seen mushrooming of herbal divisions.
Recently, there has been resurgence in usage of herbal medicine in the past few years, not only among the traditional medicine users or ethno-medicine but also among the modern consumers of herbal products. This is supplemented with all round growth of similar natural products among the herbal category, which is defined and accepted in few regulated markets, or is as under nutritional supplements category and personal care segments. Now, researchers are also talking about reverse pharmacology, when tested on humans, need no clinical trials, drop down to animal studies, for safety of the particular herbal cocktail.

A debate still exists; whether clinical trials are necessary for time tested herbs or they do require clinical trials, to ascertain their efficacy and safety in the changing environments and decades.
